Lessons from the Green Man

This blogger has been trying to eat something from his garden every day of the year. Here are some of his lessons learned. I broke a few yesterday, but it was finally so nice. I optimistically planted some seeds in the garden, but under glass. I've had greens in the greenhouse for about a month now, so I think it will be okay! As I was preparing one of the beds, I found three small lettuces growing! Little miracles to have survived the snow and freezing temps we had several times this year.

What do you have growing?

  1. I have a small amount of arugula, wild arugula (self-seeded) and kale greens ready for eating right now. Komatsuna is growing really well. Butter lettuce, sown on Christmas eve, is coming up. Also, tiny mustard and mesclun mix greens are slowly emerging. Peas are up and getting hailed on! Radishes are also up but the new leaves are getting chewed on by something. Lets hope May brings sunshine & warmth.

  2. I have 2 covered beds with everything in these coming up - kale, broccoli, lettuces, carrots, beets, radishes and such. My peas are in an uncovered bed and the first planting disappeared by a combo of cold and wet April weather and golden-crowned sparrows (they got my peas last year too!). Planted them again and hoping for the best. Still waiting for potatoes to pop up (also uncovered). I dug one up to take a peek and all is well - hope to see them sprout up above the soil soon. Had the first harvest of rhubarb last week - yum!
